Finca La Flor

Last week we had a couple interesting cultural activities and classes in the afternoons after our spanish classes. On Tuesday, we went to Finca La Flor, an organic farm about an hour from San Jose they do all of their growing and much of their farm operations with the principals of sustainable development, organic farming, and soil regeneration (is that a term?) in mind. Additionally, they provide lots of education to local school children, students such as us, and then they also have a large, well developed program for extranjero volunteers that want to come and learn spanish, work on the farm, etc. It sort of is the type of place I imagine based on what I had heard about Costa Rica before coming.


A few of the highlights were first a biodigestor, to the right, that they had set up to provide gas for a stove in line with their principle of sustainability. As our guide described it, it was powered by ¨caca de vaca¨. (Vaca would be cow). Under the tarp is the so called ¨stomach¨ of the digestor.


They also have a variety of medicinal plants, and to demonstrate their usefulness, they gave a couple students in our group quite possibly the largest piece of aloe I´ve ever seen to treat rather alarming sunburns the two had.


Finally, there were a variety of animals around, including goats of all sizes. Some were a bit squirmier than others. Next, our final weekend trip as a group.
